Marysville Intensive
For the first MoDDD intensive for 2019, held as part of our annual Shelter & Settlements Week, we were joined in Marysville by Sandra D’Urzo, Senior Shelter and Settlements Advisor at the IFRC Secretariat in Geneva, Fabian Prideaux, project manager, humanitarian shelter advisor and trainer for Humanitarian Benchmark Consulting, Regan Potangaroa and Nicole Hahn from RedR, and Dr David Barton, Graeme Browne and Barry Thomas who spoke about the impact of the Black Saturday bushfires on Marysville.
The Shelter Kit exercise facilitated by Fabian Prideaux and Sandra D’Urzo aimed to familiarise students with the IFRC shelter kit and its potential uses in emergency situations and allow student teams to design and rapidly construct an emergency shelter.
Students also took part in two simulations with RedR trainers over two days: The first was a camp planning exercise where they worked in a team to lay out a planned camp based on the SPHERE standards. In the second simulation students again working in teams developed an urban renewal program for Delmas 19, an informal settlement that is located in the CBD of Port au Prince, Haiti.
Public Lecture: Design Like You Give a Damn
Following the intensive MoDDD was honored to welcome three leaders in architecture and built environments to discuss their experiences working at the nexus of shelter and infrastructure design, social change and environmental sustainability.
MoDDD would like to thank Jeremy McLeod (Founding Director, Breathe Architecture), Sandra D’Urzo (Senior Officer, Shelter and Settlements, IFRC) and Finn Pedersen (Director, Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects) as well as Bonnie Herring (Director, Breathe Architecture) for participating in the Q&A and everyone who attended for making the night a success.
